About Bridgeport
Scenery
Some of the most breath taking scenery in the world surrounds Bridgeport.
The area which now constitutes Mono County, California, was, prior to the coming of the white man, a spiritually sacred place to the Paiute Indians. "Mono" in Paiute means "beautiful", which aptly describes this highly scenic area. Its topography is generally rugged, particularly along its northern sector where some of the Sierra Nevada peaks reach to over 12,000 feet.
Precipitous canyons, crags, perennial snowflakes, and hot springs are interspersed with a myriad of clear mountain streams and lakes. Wide valleys support intensive ranching, as well as providing a pastoral foreground to the rugged and scenic Sierra.
Some of the most breath taking scenery in the world surrounds Bridgeport. Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall. Deer, bear, the ghost town of Bodie, the majestic Sierra mountains and waterfalls, brilliant meadows blanketed in a million colors and forest so overwhelming and awesome.
History
The town of Bridgeport developed primarily as a trade and supply center for the gold mining camps scattered throughout the area. Its early importance was as a logging town supplying building materials and mining timber for Aurora, Masonic and Bodie. It became the Mono County seat, and today boasts of having the second oldest courthouse in California.
